An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Tofu waste (TW) at the three levels 20%, 40% and 50% in diets for laying hens. A total of 98 hens at 40 weeks of age and with an initial body weight of 2.38 to 2.46 kg were allocated to 4 treatments and 3 replications. The diets were formulated according to Vietnamese official standards including a control treatment without Tofu waste (0TW) or with TW 20%, 40%, 50% of the protein from soybean meal in the 0TW diet based on DM.
Dried TW had no effect on final body weight, hatchability, haugh unit, yolk color, yolk Index, thickness egg shell, but there was a significant difference among treatments on total number of eggs laid, rate of lay, egg weight and albumen Index.
Feed costs of per kg reduced by 6.4 to 12.7 % units compared to the 0TW, for diets 20%TW, 40%TW and 50%TW, respectively. Feed cost per 10 eggs was highest for diet 50%TW (20,800VND/kg) followed by 20%TW (19,900VND) and 0%TW (18,500VND). The lowest cost was in diet 40% TW (18,400 VND/kg) which is about 3% lower than for 0%TW. Therefore the replacement of 40% Tofu waste is suggested as a protein source in the diet of Luong Phuong laying hens.
