Objectives of the Workshop
- To exchange experiences on technical problems and solutions
(feeding, breeding, and reproduction) of goat production in SE Asia
- To discuss the role of goats in smallholder
farming systems - advantages and constraints (eg. economy and in
environmental protection)
- To exchange social aspects of goat production
and poverty alleviation in the rural areas and appropriate policies
for improving goat development
Plenary programme
The workshop will consist of 2 days of presentation of papers and discussions
and a one day field trip.
Each session is 1.5-2 hours and consists of an introductory paper outlining the
present knowledge within the subject (25 minutes talk and 5 minutes discussion).
This will be an invited paper.
This is followed by 3-4 submitted papers (15 minutes talk and 5 minutes
discussion). These papers should present original and recent research that has
not been published elsewhere.
The rest of the submitted papers will be presented as posters.
The subjects of the sessions will be as follows:
- Small ruminant nutrition and nutrient requirements
- Feed resources and feeding systems
- Genetics, breeding and reproduction
- Diseases of small ruminants (including parasites) in hot and humid climates
- Role of small ruminants in the farming system
- Social importance of small ruminant production

Publications
Submitted papers should consist of maximum 3 A4 pages (everything
included). The papers will be printed in proceedings from the workshop and also
on the Mekarn Home Page. Please
see the enclosed instructions paper format.
The papers should be submitted by e-mail to the chairman and the first
scientific adviser (binhbavi@netnam.vn, Ly.niah@netnam.org.vn).
A CD will be prepared and given to all participants at the end of the workshop,
which will contain all the presented papers (as Power Point presentations) and
posters.
The scientific committee will decide on type of presentation (oral or poster)
and inform the authors. Format and instructions for the posters will be
available in the first week of December in the homepage and will also be sent
directly to presenters of posters.
The poster file should be sent on a CD to the organizers addresses as above
or by e-mail according to agreement with the organizers. The posters will be
printed in Hanoi by the organizers.
Registration
Registration fee will be 50 USD per person covering handouts, lunches,
welcome reception, field trip and farewell party. Organizing committee will
arrange reasonably priced hotel for the participants. This workshop is, however,
sponsored by the MEKARN project. The cost for the participants from the MEKARN
network, who have contributed a presentation will be supplied by the MEKARN
network.
Registration should be made no later than 15th
January, 2005 on the enclosed form.
