Effect of different techniques for fermenting liquid feed on  performance and Entero-bacteria counts  of grower and finisher pigs

Thirty weaned Yorkshire pigs (23 ± 1 kg) were given dry feed (BS), non fermented liquid feed (NFLF), fermented broken rice (FLFBR12h) soaked for 12h, fermented broken rice (FLFBR24h) soaked for 24h and fermented basal diet (FLFBS12h) soaked for 24h. Measurements  were made of performance, nutrient digestibility, excretion of phosphorus and nitrogen, and counts of Coliform and Salmonella. The trial lasted for 90 days. The live weight gain of pigs given FLFBR24h was significantly higher than for pigs fed the BS diet. Feed conversion ratio was similar among diets

The numbers of Enterobacteria counts in the feeds and faeces of diets FLFBR12h , FLFBR24h,  FLFBS12h and FLFBS24h were significantly lower than those in diets BS and NFLF. E. coli was totally absent in faeces from  diets of FLFBR12h FLFBR24h FLFBS12h and FLFBS24h. Feed cost of the fermented diets was lower than for the BS diet.

It is concluded that giving pigs fermented liquid feed improves the live weight gain, and reduces the numbers of  Enterobacteria and Coliform  in the feeds and faeces.
