Developing a data base for monitoring goat and rabbit breeding programs in Vietnam

The Goat and Rabbit Research Center, Sontay, is the leading Centre in Vietnam, in goat, sheep and rabbit breeding management and transfer of technologies on small ruminant and rabbit production. The old method of goat, sheep and rabbit breeding management by recording data in books is very difficult to use for the evaluation of the breeding value.

Under funding by SIDA/SAREC, an animal breeding management (MTDFREML) program was selected to be applied in GRRC to solve this problem. After a training course of 7 days for 20 researchers from GRRC and others provinces, this program has been used successfully to identify superior sires and dams in the Boer goat herd at GRRC.
