Programme and abstracts

Objectives of the Workshop

To exchange experiences on problems and solutions in the feeding of forages as the major part of the diet of pigs and rabbits in the tropics
To discuss the role of forages as components of environmentally friendly integrated farming systems
To discuss the role of pigs and rabbits for poverty alleviation in the rural areas

Plenary programme

The workshop will consist of 2 days of presentation of papers and discussions and a one day field trip. There will be three plenary papers outlining the background to, and present knowledge within, the subject (25 minutes talk and 5 minutes discussion). These will be invited papers. The rest of the workshop will be organized in sessions according to the subject areas indicated below for submitted papers (15 minutes talk and 5 minutes discussion). These papers should present original and recent research that has not been published elsewhere. Papers than cannot be accommodated in the oral sessions will be presented as posters.

The subjects of the sessions will be as follows:

Selection and cultivation of protein-rich forages in different ecological zones
Features of the digestive physiology of pigs and rabbits that relate to utilization of forages
Feeding systems for pigs using forages as the major sources of protein
Feeding systems for rabbits using forages as the major component of the diet
Role of pigs and rabbits and their social importance in integrated farming systems

Selection of papers and posters

Intending contributors should submit an abstract of their paper to trpreston@mekarn.org. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 July 2006.

Publications

All papers presented at the workshop, either as oral or poster presentations, will be published on the Mekarn web site and as printed proceedings. A CD will be prepared and given to all participants at the end of the workshop, which will contain all the presented papers (as Power Point presentations) and posters.

Formats and instructions for the preparation of papers and posters are on the Mekarn Web Site (http://www.mekarn.org) . Authors should copy their papers on a CD Rom or "flash disk" and hand it to any member of the organizing committee on or before the opening of the workshop on 22 August 2006.Power Point files of oral presentations should be submitted on CD-ROM or "flash disk" and given to Dr Preston during the first two days of the workshop.

Registration

The registration fee will be 50 USD per person covering handouts, lunches, welcome reception, field trip and farewell party. The organizing committee will arrange reasonably priced hotel for the participants. The cost for the participants from the MEKARN network, who have contributed a presentation, will be supplied by the MEKARN network.

Registration should be made no later than 15^th July 2006 on the enclosed form.

Participants:
Maximum about 50 participants. MEKARN (Mekong Basin Animal Research Network) can provide some support for travel, accommodation and food, but not for all participants. Participants from MEKARN collaborating universities contributing papers or posters will be given priority for economic support.
