Abstract

The Research and Development Program of High yield and quality Forage Resources for Animals has been in operation in Vietnam during a period of 6 years (2001-2006). There were 24 varieties tested in different ecological regions of North Vietnam in which 9 varieties have been largely introduced in the practice, mainly in cut and carry systems and have contributed a very important role in Rabbit production development, especially for Rabbit production for the smallholders. The varieties were selected and extended to both sectors of small farms and enterprises and not only to produce green fodder but also for making hay for feeding to rabbits in the dry season. Multi-purpose trees and leguminous trees have been evaluated and gave high yield and foliage quality. The development project of improved grasses and legumes for rabbit is one of the key solutions for increasing feed resources and reducing feed cost for feeding rabbit in the North of Vietnam. The technologies of manure application, irrigation and selection of high yielding and good quality species have been transferred to farming systems in Hatay, Hoabinh and Ninhbinh provinces and applied for the development of feed resources for rabbit production by farmers
