The Small-scale Production of Food, Fuel. Feed and Fertilizer
Modern agriculture is failing. For the manner in which food, fuel, feed and
fertilizer are being produced is not sustainable. This lack of sustainability
can be traced back to inadequate means of dealing with waste. Six different
means of waste processing are highlighted in this presentation: 1) composting,
2) fermentation, 3) gasification, 4) sterilization and cooking, 5) rapid
bio-conversion and 6) direct application. The integration of these six
approaches to waste are illustrated in the case of swine production. Here the
small-scale pig farmer produces food, fuel, feed and fertilizer in a thoroughly
sustainable manner.
