The study reviews quantitative assessment of the availability of agricultural raw materials including wastes from animal husbandry and agricultural production factories for bioenergy production to meet the national plan for bioenergy development from 2010 to 2025. It also analyses the effect of rising biofuel production on national food security with consideration of two important aspects: land use change and population development. In addition, the economically viable potential of biofuels produced under current technological level in relation with fossil energy prices is examined. This study also describes some advanced biomass conversion systems that might play a role in Vietnam’s energy systems in the future. Finally, recommendations for agricultural policy to promote sustainable bioenergy development are suggested from these analyses.
