MEKARN Workshop 2009: Livestock, Climate Change and the Environment |
|
|
The First announcement INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP Livestock, Climate Change and the Environment |
|
|
16-18 November 2009, Angiang University, Long Xuyen City, Vietnam |
Justification
Concern for environmental issues has been a major feature of the MEKARN program since its initiation at the beginning of 2001. A number of initiatives have been, and continue to be, developed to strengthen the ways in which livestock can contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and the improvement of the environment, with greater use of farm-based inputs and decreased dependency on outside resources.
It is therefore pertinent to review progress in areas such as: recycling livestock wastes through biodigesters, earthworms and fly larvae; combined feed and fuel production from biomass; improvement of soil fertility by use of biochar and biodigester effluent; aquaculture as a component of integrated farming systems; increasing biodiversity by expanding the role of trees and shrubs as sources of feed and fuel.
The aims of the workshop are to:
Review recent developments in the triple crisis facing the world: climate change, resource depletion and a deteriorating environment
Promote strategies for development of agriculture practices that will respond to each of the above issues
Emphasize the important role that live stock play in ensuring the sustainability of agricultural practices
Explore ways to strengthen research for promoting sustainable agriculture
Workshop fund, travel and accommodation fee
MEKARN will provide funds:
· To the Dept of Animal Sciences, AGU to organize the workshop
· To cover costs of presenters of the MEKARN network and invited speakers
Other participants will pay themselves.
