Live stock production, climate change and resource depletion |
Abstract
A growth trial was conducted with 16 cross-bred pigs with average 23.4 kg mean initial live weight in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with four replications of four treatments, with one pig in each pen. The treatments were rice distillers’ residue (RD) at 0, 10, 20 and 30 percent of the diet DM in combination with Taro silage (Leaves + stems) mixed with rice bran (proportions of rice bran and Taro silage were59:40, 39:50, 24:55 and 10:59 (DM basis). Feed intake and live weight gain were increased and feed conversion improved as the percentage of rice distillers’ residue in the diet was increased (Table 1; Figures 1-4).
It is concluded that either the biological value of the protein in rice distiller's residue is superior to that in Taro silage, or that the rice distiller's residue provides other nutrients or growth factors (eg: probiotics) that promote better growth rate and feed conversion.
