Processing and utilization of sweet potato vines and roots for

F1 crossbred fattening pigs

The hypothesis:
1. Sweet potato roots and vines can be store as feed for pigs by ensiling and drying.

2. That is possible to use sweet potato roots (SPR) and vines (SPV) in both dried form and as silage in diets for F1 crossbred fattening pigs without affecting performance, and with improved economic efficiency.

Experiment 1: SPR after grinding and SPV after chopping mixed together and ensilaged with 5 different ratios as 30, 40, 50, 60,70% of SPV with 70, 60, 50, 40, 30% of SPR respectively in dry basis as treatment 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Samples of SP silage will be analysed at: 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 70 and 84 days after ensiling to determine Dry matter, Crude protein, NDF, calcium and phosphorus, pH value and organic acid content, NH3, colour, smell

Experiment 2. Three castrated F1 crossbred (Large White x Mong Cai) fattening pigs of 35 kg body weight (on average) will be used according to a 3x3 latin square design with 3 treatments and three 12-day periods to determined digestibility of SP silage and SP meal base on basal diet.  The best ratio of sweet potato vines and roots silage from experiment 1 will be chosen for this experiment.

Experiment 3. A total of 40 F1 crossbred fattening pigs of 15 kg initial weight (20 males and 20 females) will be allocated to 4 households with 10 pigs in each. Animals in each farm will be kept in 5 pens (2 pigs in each pen) as 5 treatments: Basal diet, 60% of basal diet and 40% of SP vine and root silage, 40% of basal diet and 60% of SP vine and root silage, 60% of basal diet and 40% of whole SP meal, 40% of basal diet and 60% of whole SP meal (dry basis). The ratio of SPV and SPR is the same one in experiment 2. The trial will last until the pigs reach 75kg.

Measurement: growth rate of pigs, feed conversion ratio, economic efficiency, Dressing percentage and thickness of back fat of pigs at the end of experiment.

Mix sweet potato roots and sweet potato vines
