The
research you wish to undertake
10.1
The problem to be addressed: (define the problem
to be addressed)
In the highlands rural areas of
Laos, indigenous pigs are commonly raised on a free ranging basis except in
some villages pigs are mainly kept in pens. The most common diet for pigs in
these villages is corn. Pigs grow at very slow rate. A large number of pigs may
need a year to reach the market weight. This is suspected to be due to the low
feeding inputs and disease and parasite problems.
10.2
What is the hypothesis you wish to test?:
(Describe the hypothesis)
The
hypothesis we wish to test is:
The growth rate of indigenous pigs raised on corn can be increased by supplementing protein in their diet and the control of internal parasite.
In order to make
the procedure appropriate to the poor farmers, dried leucaena leaves will be
used as the protein source and a local medicinal plant called “ma-gleua” will
be used to control internal parasite.
10.3 Work plan:
10.31
A team of researchers from Laos, Mr.
Vanthong Phengvichith (DLRC), and from
Thailand, Dr. Pongchan Na-Lampang
(SUT), Dr. Suporn Katawatin (KKU), and
Dr. Choke Mikled (CMU), will survey the
targeted villages in Laos P.D.R. to identify the problems of the existing
indigenous pig production system. Rapid Rural Appraisal technique will be used.
10.02 Participating villagers (about 10 households) in each village will be divided into two groups. Group I or control group will raise their pigs in the usual way, i.e. feed with corn without any internal parasite control. Group II will raise their pigs by using corn as the main diet as Group I but supplement with fresh or dry luecaena leaves and control of internal parasite with “ma-gleau” Growth rate and health status of the pigs in the two groups will be measured and recorded. The data will be analyzed by using appropriate statistical methods.

The
research you wish to undertake
10.1
The problem to be addressed: (define the problem
to be addressed)
Indigenous pigs are disappearing
from Thailand very fast because they are considered low productive and thus
unfit to modern production system. However, the valuable characteristics such
as adaptation to hash conditions and poor quality feed of these pigs are still
fit for many farmers who can not raise exotic pigs in modern ways. The indigenous
pigs are still raised in certain areas of Northeast Thailand. The people in
these areas are of minority ethnic groups and they seem to have their specific
systems of pig raising. It is of interest to study the reasons and the methods
as well as the problems and opportunity of indigenous pig raising in these
areas. The knowledge acquired form this study will be useful for farmers who
are still raising indigenous pigs as well as the poor farmers who are in need
of an alternative way to generate income with low input. This study is also
very useful for the conservation of indigenous domestic animals of Thailand.
10.2
What is the hypothesis you wish to test?:
(Describe the hypothesis)
The
hypotheses we wish to test are:
1) The
indigenous pigs are still important in term of economic and social value in the
rural areas of Northeast Thailand.
2) The
raising systems of indigenous pigs with low cash input are fit or can be
modified to fit for poor farmers in rural areas of Northeast Thailand as well
as Laos P.D.R.
