The objective of the international PhD programme is to train PhD students from developing countries to become professionally skilled scientists with strong theoretical backgrounds.
A PhD study programme lasts from 3 to 4 years. At least 80% of the study time is dedicated to thesis research and defence, and 20% to review literatures and courses. The PhD student can enroll either fulltime or “Sandwich” programme. For “Sandwich” programme, the PhD student will be in Hue City one time per year for presenting his/her study progress and literature review papers.
Admission to the PhD programme is open to MSc graduates from developing countries and also to MSc graduates from Vietnamese Universities. They must fulfill following requirements:
ü Hold MSc diploma relevant to applied PhD specialization
ü Full proficiency of English is also required. They should meet one of the following criteria:
o Citizen from countries where English is the official language
o Graduated BSc or MSc in which English is the teaching language
o Hold TOEFL certificate with at least 500 points or IELTS with at least 5.5 points
ü Provide financial evidences to cover university fee, research fee, living allowance
ü Be in good health
Admission procedures
PhD candidates submit following documents in English:
ü PhD application form (see attached file)
ü Notified copy of BSc or MSc certificates
ü Notified copy of BSc or MSc transcripts
ü Certified experience declaration
ü List of published papers
ü Abstract (1200-1500 words) of MSc thesis
ü PhD research proposal
ü English efficiency proofs
ü Two recommendation letters
ü Health certificate
ü Financial guarantee declaration
ü Four 4x6 pictures, not older than 6 months till the day sending the application form
The Scientific board will evaluate the research proposal and the feasibility to realize proposed research. During this process, directly interview PhD candidates may need.
Hue University informs the PhD candidates examining results not later than 2 weeks since received the application forms.
The PhD research proposal
A PhD project proposal is written by the PhD student him/herself after having found a supervisor. Before submitting the PhD proposal, the entire funding of the PhD study must be secured, including the university tuition fee, research and travel costs, living and housing costs. In the case of a “Sandwich” PhD project, the commitment of the institute in the student's home country where the research will be conducted must be guaranteed.
The project proposal is submitted to the scientific board, who assesses the scientific quality and the feasibility of the proposed research. A meeting will be arranged for PhD students to present their project proposal and receive comments and suggestions from the scientific board.
During the course of their research projects, PhD students publish in refereed journals. Publishing at least two articles before thesis defense is compulsory requirement of all PhD students.
At the end of the programme, the student will defense his/her thesis at 2 levels: the university and national level at two scientific boards (5-7 scientists). Before defense, the thesis is evaluated by two independent examiners, who are appointed by the ministry of training and education. Normally, it takes few months from the university to the national level.
In order to support PhD student, two supervisors are needed (at least one supervisor from Hue College of Agriculture and Forestry).
The PhD student are required to fulfill
ü Three Reading Courses (2 credits/one) (under supervision of his/her supervisors)
The PhD student are advised to attend following in-depth supporting courses given by Hue College of Agriculture and Forestry:
ü Advanced statistics course (2 credits)
ü How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper (2 credits)
ü Advanced animal nutrition (2 credits)
ü Advanced animal production system analyses (2 credits)
ü Animal breeding in the tropics (2 credits)
Apart from taking courses, students are required to exposure to scientific events such as conferences, seminars and presentations.
The University fee
All PhD candidates who are not employees of Hue College of Agriculture and Forestry are required to pay a University Fee of 1,500 US$/year, including courses, supervision, thesis defense.
PhD students must pay research by
themselves and based on their research topics and all personal
expenditures.
