Objectives

After completing the course the student should be able to:

• understand the factors that have contributed to the development of specific breeds of live stock commonly found in tropical latitudes
• understand the importance of breed*environment interactions
• understand the advantages and disadvantages of “indigenous’ breeds of live stock
• understand the methods used in selection of specific genotypes
• describe ways of cross-breeding in major live stock species
• understand the effects of selection on nutrient partitioning (eg: milk versus meat)
• advantages and disadvantages of dual-purpose versus specialized breeds

Content

Most frequently found breeds in the major live stock species in tropical latitudes. Characteristics of economically breeds. Selection and crossbreeding as tools for breed improvement. Indigenous breeds and tolerance to harsh environments. Breeding for productivity or for better utilization of local feed resources.
