Objectives

After completing the course the student should be able to:

• describe the major diseases that affect live stock in tropical latitudes
• understand the practices for controlling and/or treating diseases
• describe the most commonly used practices to control diseases
• understand the importance of animal welfare as a component of sustainable production systems
• describe ‘good” and “bad’ practices in the management of live stock as these relate to animal welfare.
• understand animal – human relationships as features of animal welfare

Content

Major diseases of live stock in the tropics. Prophylaxis and treatment to combat disease. Vaccines and drugs. Stress factors that affect animals and humans working with animals. Examples of management systems that enhance animal welfare.
