Postgraduate course in

Livestock Reproduction in the Tropics:

physiology, pathology and enhancement

Course organizers:                Dr. Ulf Magnusson (U.M)

Dr. Tran Thi Dan (T.T.Dan)

Mr. Lam Quang Nga (L.Q.Nga)

MSc. Duong Nguyen Khang (D.N.Khang)

Time:              18-30, March 2002

Place:             Ho Chi Minh City, VietNam

Rationale

Reproductive performance is a key element in livestock production – regardless if the production is aiming towards milk or meat production. However, the reproductive physiology of animals is a fine tuned system sensitive to alterations in “normal” factors such as temperature and nutrition. Moreover, the system is also sensitive to diseases, such as infections affecting the entire animal and of course those specifically affecting the reproductive organs. Finally, there is a set of management means and procedures that may enhance the reproductive performance, for instance artificial insemination.

Objectives

The course will:

  • Allow the participant to describe and discuss  the state of the art of livestock reproduction in their respective country.
  • Give the fundamentals in male and female reproductive physiology of ruminants (with emphasis on cattle) and pigs.
  • Present the general concepts about the interaction between reproduction and climate and reproduction and nutrition, respectively.
  • Give an overview of the most important infectious diseases affecting livestock reproduction and some basic preventive measures.
  • Give an introduction to and some practical training in reproductive technology for livestock.
